The useful starting point

Online interior design uses a shared project brief, photographs, measurements and remote discussion to develop a room direction. It can help with layout, furniture, colours and sourcing. It does not replace an on-site survey, structural assessment, local permit work or installation services. The exact package and revision process should be agreed in writing.

You do not need to live around the corner to begin a thoughtful design conversation. HLM’s online design approach brings room planning, colour direction and sourcing guidance into a remote process. Your measurements, photographs and priorities give the project its starting point. The work is then scoped around the kind of help you need and what can be assessed responsibly from a distance.

Start with a room, a routine and a goal

Show the whole room, including awkward corners, windows, doors and the pieces you plan to retain. Explain a normal day in the space and the specific moments that do not work. A small set of reference images is useful when each has a note explaining what you like: the colour, the seating arrangement or the sense of calm.

Measure before the shortlist becomes an order

A remote plan depends on the information supplied. Check wall lengths, openings, ceiling heights, fixed fittings and furniture dimensions. Before buying, verify the product measurements, delivery route, stair turns and lift access. Local trades must check site conditions and installation requirements for work that depends on them.

Know what arrives at the end

Ask whether the proposed scope includes a layout, concept board, palette, sourcing list, alternatives or implementation notes. Confirm the number of review rounds and what happens if an item becomes unavailable. Agree who places orders and handles delivery, returns and installation so the practical work has a clear owner.

What to include in your brief

  • A measured sketch and photos from every corner
  • A list of items to keep and the room’s main functions
  • Your city and any sourcing or delivery limitations
  • Preferred budget range, pace and level of implementation help

A few good questions

Can I enquire from anywhere in Canada?

Yes. HLM welcomes online design enquiries from across Canada. Share your city, project type and timing so the proposed remote scope and availability can be assessed. Local on-site services are confirmed separately where relevant.

Will a remote plan include permit drawings?

Do not assume it will. A room concept or furniture layout is different from permit or construction documentation. Any such requirement must be identified and assigned to appropriately qualified local professionals in the agreed scope.

Who buys and installs the furniture?

That depends on the agreed service. Clarify who handles ordering, delivery, returns, assembly and installation before proceeding. A sourcing recommendation alone does not include procurement or installation.
